Creating the perfect holiday tablescape doesn’t have to be hard. With a vision and a few it odds and ends, you can totally pull it off.
I appreciate the importance of connecting with family and making dinner gatherings special. I also like to make sure they are well styled but usually talk myself out of it because it sounds like too much effort, or don’t even know where to begin.
Well, this year I wanted things to be different. I want to give my family that wow factor when they sit down to eat our Christmas meal. This year, paper plates just won’t do. It was time to up my game and go all out. But not in a crazy kind of way. Something elegant and beautiful but simple.
When creating the perfect holiday tablescape, try not to overthink it. While doing my usual shopping at my local Meijer, I took a peek at their cute little holiday section they had set up. I grabbed a few items off the shelf, threw in a few things I had laying around the house and this is what I came up with.
The perfect holiday tablescape can be whatever you want it to be. Make it warm and inviting while adding your own personality.
Here are a few tips for making your tablescape great:
Choose a color theme – I went with red, green, gold and brown after seeing this table runner. It was love at first sight! Plus it was on sale, so it was a double win.
Use a table runner – Whether you’re using a long table or a short, a table runner is always a good idea. It’s the perfect way to make your table decorations look fuller than they need to be. Filling up your table with flowers, candles and other decorative items can get expensive quickly.
Create a centerpiece – Or several, depending on how long your table is. I used a 6 person table so I just made one really big centerpiece in the middle of the table. For longer tables, you could do several of them.
Non-scented candles – I love a little bit of mood lighting at our holiday dinners. For this tablescape, I used non-scented floating candles. You don’t want your candles interfering with the taste of the food.
Place cards – I chose not to use place cards for this tablescape because I wanted to keep things simple. But you can easily write names on card stock and hold them in place with a pinecone. Easy but cute!
Centerpieces for your holiday tablescape don’t have to be complicated either. They can be storebought or homemade.
I will include the directions to these below.
Would you believe me if I told you this flatware is plastic? It is! So while I am not doing paper plates this year, this gold set was way prettier than anything I own. And they look so real. You don’t have to use plasticware for your tablescape if it’s not your thing, I just loved the way these tied it all together.
I bought a piece of burlap from the crafting section and cut it into strips to create napkin rings. I wanted to give my tablescape a shabby farmhouse look. Again, it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
Add some foliage to your design and viola. You have perfection.
Just repeat your design all the way down the table making for the perfect holiday tablescape.
Just in case you are curious about how I made this beautiful centerpiece, let me break it down:
-
- Glass jars I already had
-
- Small branches from pine (real or fake will work – I used fake)
-
- Fresh cranberries
-
- Water
-
- Floating candle
Wrap the branches of pine around the bottom of the empty jar in a circular motion. Fill with water approximately 3/4 of the way full. Add fresh cranberries to the glass jar. They will float to the top so be sure to leave enough room for a candle in the middle. Once you add your candle, you are done! Easy peasy.

Since the holidays can be so busy (and stressful) I tend to forget about little details once in a while. Having a house full of guests can often lead to a house full of mess. And since time is short these days, I’m beyond thankful for Shipt. I was able to order all of my P&G household supplies from the Shipt app and have them delivered within hours. I love your centerpiece! I will have to try that with my trifle bowl I wrote about in one of my last posts. Very beautiful!
That is an absolutely beautiful table setting. It looks like it took forever. Glad that it didn’t. And to be able to have it all delivered to our door. A dream. Thanks for sharing.
I shared your FB Post: William Griesmer
I have been loving cranberries this year, and adding greenery! It’s so pretty and festive. Also, the gold flatware is a huge hit! I bought some from target to use at my holiday party this year and people kept asking me if I wanted them to use other flatware because it looks so nice. They had no idea it was plastic until they picked it up!
Your table looks beautiful. Love the simple elegance of the centerpieces! Thanks so much for sharing! Merry Christmas
I shared on Facebook! This is such great information, I really love that you used fresh cranberries, I think it really looks gorgeous in the overall decoration! So pretty 🙂
beautiful! not sure I shared the right post because in rafflecopter it doesn’t say which post to share but I think I got the right one! (giveaway post)
I LOVE this table setting. And I totally agree with the unscented candles. You don’t want to be working on that meal all day long & have it overpowered by the candles. The centerpieces are gorgeous. Using a service to have things delivered is awesome this time of year when we’re busy getting our decor & meals set!
I love your floating candle decor, it is so pretty and definitely Christmasy. I would have never thought not to add a scented candle because it might interfere with the taste of the good. Great idea!
You nailed your table dressing (is that what they call it??) it looks perfect and so effortlessly festive! I love the centerpiece you created. such a clever idea!
I love the idea of using cranberries and pine branches, it gives such a festive feel to the entire decor. The best part is that it is not very complicated! Shipt must have made you so happy-What is better than household supplies being delivered at doorsteps!
That is an absolutely beautiful table setting. I love the details, everything looks so bright and festive, so perfect for holiday and Christmas.
This is amazing, i love the simplicity of the table dressing. These little neat tricks were just what I was looking for to make the Xmas table look great come the 25th!
Such a pretty tablescape!! I love doing different ones every year, so it kind of changes a bit each year but stays festive. I really like how you did the reds, greens, and candles. I agree – unscented at the dinner table is best.
Beautiful tablescape. Growing up, that was not something that we did. I love the color scheme and burlap addition. Any ideas for a round table, can a table runner still be used?
so lovely candles and the theme is so nice! you can really feel the ambiance of Christmas in that table preparation. It would be happier for the family to sit together and eat with such a beautiful and well prepared table.
That holiday tablescape look so great. That is really perfect for this holiday! I am in love with decorating the house. I want to add some details and ideas in the kitchen. I want to try this
Thank you so much for your kind words. You could still do a table runner! I would 🙂 and do a grand round centerpiece. The most important part is to not overthink it. I can’t wait to see your pics of your finished table.
