Here’s your step by step instructions to build your very own cardboard box car your kids are sure to love!
Being a racing family, we are always looking for fun ways to celebrate the IndyCar races here in town. This year, we decided to make cardboard box race cars! And since we already had the supplies it was a free activity on a rainy day. With an empty box, a few paper plates and some paints, you and your kids can make your very own cardboard box race car.
Here’s what you will need:
- An empty box
- Acrylic paints
- Paint brushes
- 5 paper plates
- Scrap paper
To make your cardboard box car, start by taping down all flaps. Once those are secure, cut three sides of a square into the widest part/ top of the box. This will make an area for your little race car drive to sit in the “cockpit” leaving a flap that will flip up to make the top of the seat.
Paint your cardboard box race car with desired colors. You might need a few coats of paint, depending on the box used.
Paint 4 of the paper plates black to make the wheels. Cut small squares out of red construction paper to make the taillights. With a cup or a bowl, trace circles on yellow paper to make the headlights in the from of your cardboard box car. We just did a simple car design, but please feel free to make it your own and get as elaborate as your would like.
Add other small details with paint. Once your cardboard box car is completely dry, you’re off to the races!

I made this super cute costume for her and spent less than $5.00 doing it. Total WIN! She looks super cute and will be able to keep warm without wearing her coat over her Halloween costume.
Here’s what I used:
- I bought a plain red sleeper from a consignment shop for $1.99
- They happen to have a checkered flag print handkerchief for $0.50 (I would have used checkered duct tape otherwise)
