As a first time mom, I was worried about potty training my son. Actually, I was really dreading it and kept putting it off. How was I supposed to know if my son was ready to transition from diapers, to training pants, and then eventually to “big boy” undies?
Like most moms nowadays, I did some research online for some helpful tips on how to potty train toddlers. Even though most of the potty training tips apply to both boys and girls, I felt like boys had more of a challenge. Should I start potty training my son standing first, or sitting down, and how do we practice good aim.
So to get started, I prepared a fun and interactive “potty training package” for my son. I felt like it was important to get him involved as much as possible in order for him to feel confident about the whole process. We shopped together and let him pick out his own potty seat, along with some CVS Training Pants with refasten-able sides, and a prize – a monster truck.
Here is what worked in our “Potty Training Journey”
- Proper Tools to Start Potty Training – Having a potty seat in which your child feels comfortable in is very important. But also having the right training pants is essential. My munchkin is tall and slim, so sometimes we have a hard time finding the right fit for him. So while picking up some last minute groceries at our local CVS, I decided to purchase CVS Training Pants with refastenable sides. These are great because refastenable sides provide a comfy, all-around stretch for a great fit! And not only do they fit perfect on my little man, but they also have a wetness indicator that fades when wet and have customized, absorbent protection for both boys and girls.
CVS Training Pants come in a wide variety of sizes including: 2T-3T (18-34 LBS), 3T-4T (32-40 LBS), and 4T-5T (38+ LBS). - Patience, Patience, Patience – Communication is key during this journey. For a few weeks we’ve been talking to our son about going potty like a big boy and we try to get him as excited as possible. Do know that accidents WILL occur. Even though you are eager to stop purchasing diapers, do know that your child will start using the potty when he or she is ready. In our case, my son showed some signs of him being ready such as staying dry longer, and wanting to wear his Disney Cars themed undies.
- Sitting Down or Standing Up – We decided to train our little man to potty by standing up. We turned it into a game to make it fun and in hopes to make it faster. In his bathroom we keep a jar with Fruit Loops. When it’s time to pee we toss 2-3 Fruit Loops in his potty and ask him to aim. Once he is done he gets to pick a prize such as a candy bar, bubbles, or coloring book from his Potty Prize Box!
- Potty Breaks – Practice makes perfect right? While at home set a timer to go off every 20 minutes to take a potty break. Yes I know it will get annoying, but staying consistent during this process is very important, and just like everything else it will take practice and repetition.
- Daddy and Son Time – Let Dad take over some of the potty breaks. Encourage your son to “be like Daddy” and have him watch how his Daddy goes potty standing up. Not only will this be good training but it also gives time for father & son to bond during an important process of your kiddo growing up!
