Puppy Training 101 With Barkefellers

Oct 11 by 1 Comment

puppy training

Without proper puppy training, your dog could become naughty; soil your house, chew-up your stuff, bark excessively, dig holes, and even bite. That’s where Barkefellers comes in.

One of the most important aspects of raising a dog is obedience. In fact, they say a well-trained dog is a happier dog because they require a lot less instruction. That’s why when we brought Enzo home, we knew we needed some help.

Enzo joined our family when he was just 11-weeks-old. Jerry and I drove about two hours each way to get him and decided to surprise the girls when they got out of school. He was perfect! Well, sorta.

We quickly came to the realization that we weren’t going to be able to embark on this puppy journey alone. I mean, they say it takes a village to raise a child, so why wouldn’t you bring in help with your new family member. For us, it was a no-brainer. We knew we needed to take Enzo to Barkefellers for some one-on-one time with a professional trainer.

What is Barkefellers?

Barkefellers is a luxurious pet resort providing lavish overnight accommodations, a grooming salon, spacious doggie daycare, and obedience training through Barkefellers University.

Why Barkefellers?

Barkefellers’ obedience training (puppy training) utilizes positive reinforcement to help dogs understand what is expected of them. With multiple training sessions throughout the day and opportunities for social interaction, physical exercise, rest, and play, Barkefellers provides the perfect environment for canine learning and development.

Barkefellers offers two different types of schools:

Day School – Barkefellers University offers a convenient weekday school for dogs.  Classes are conducted Monday through Friday, and attendees should be dropped off by 9 am and picked up after 4 pm.

Stay School – For owners who want to provide a consistent environment during training, Barkefellers University offers dogs the ultimate luxury lodge and learn experience with our Stay School.

Enzo is becoming such a BIG boy. And so smart! Thank you @barkefellers for teaching him so many wonderful things. He just loves going to school!

For us, day school was the best option. It quickly became a fun part of our morning routine. We would walk Josephine to the bus stop, hop in the car and take Nevaeh to her school and head to Enzo’s school. If you’re anything like me and don’t have a ton of time in the mornings, or ever, Barkefellers offers a really efficient valet drop-off/pick-up option. Absolutely perfect for those mornings when things get so crazy, I forgot to brush my own hair.

Barkefellers’ obedience method is unique and doesn’t use punishment as a form of learning. Enzo quickly began learning commands such as sit, down, leave it and many, many more.

Picking Enzo up from puppy school at Barkefellers – Indy Northeast to see what he's been learning all week

The key to Enzo’s training has been taking what he learned at Barkefellers University and staying consistent with it. We can’t expect the wonderful trainers to teach him everything he needs to know about life in just four weeks. Plus, if he’s not using it at home he will lose it quickly. I’m sure you know the saying.

We couldn’t be more thrilled with the experience we had at Barkefellers. The staff is overly helpful, well-trained and always willing to go the extra mile. They really helped Enzo succeed and thrive during his four weeks on campus, even when he wasn’t always an ideal student. Oh, and the facilities are spot-on with cleanliness and equipment.

Graduation

During Enzo’s last week at puppy training he got a spa day! How jealous was I? His pampering included a bath, haircut and his nails trimmed. He thought he was hot stuff with his little bandana.

Graduation day was bittersweet for us. We knew it was going to be his last day attending Barkefellers University, but we were excited to start our new journey with a dog that had basic training. We will greatly miss the team at Barkefellers, but know we are welcome back at any time. Plus, they offer continued education, which is always a good idea.
