3 Things to Remember When You’re Feeling Defeated

The feeling of defeat. What a terrible thing to have weighing you down. We have all had those days, weeks, months, possible even years.  When we just feel completely overcome with everything life has decided to throw at us.
I recently applied for a position that I felt was absolutely perfect for me. I spent hours perfecting my pitch and touching up my resume. I remember laying awake that night wondering what my new life could be like as soon as they said yes. I mean, why in the world would they possibly say no?
Well, no is exactly what they said. Of course they didn’t come right out and say it like that, but that’s all I seemed to take from their thanks but no thanks email. Why was I not good enough? Why would they not have at least asked for an interview? I couldn’t seem to shake these thoughts. So much self-doubt kept running through my brain and it was sucking the life right out of me. I cried. I cried a lot actually.
After too many hours of my day spent feeling sorry for myself, I sorta had to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Were these feelings of inadequacy actually because of this rejection letter or was it something much greater than that? It was time for me to reflect and do some serious soul searching.

It’s easy to forget how to count our blessings. At least that’s how it goes for me. Sometimes I get so caught up with everything that is going wrong, all the things that I could be doing better, I forget to take a look around to see how blessed I truly am.

Here are 5 things to remember when you’re feeling completely defeated:
1. You are more than just one thing.

We all have this picture in our minds of ourselves – this idea of who we think we are. Well I am here to tell you, it’s time to change that. Honestly, I (we) can be many things, and remembering this will help stretch our identities so it isn’t so easy to feel defeated. That way it doesn’t matter if someone thinks I didn’t do a good job – because I don’t always do a good job. I make mistakes. A lot of them and I am less than perfect. And that’s perfectly OK. It’s ok for you as well.

2. You become your thoughts.

I am a big believer in the words “change your thoughts to change your life.” Seems simple, right? Well clearly we all know that isn’t the case, but if we slowly start changing our focus – good things will start happening. If we’re always thinking about the no good terrible things going on in our lives those things will keep happening. Let’s try to only give our attention to the good. What do we really have to lose?

3. Feeling defeated or discouraged means it’s time for a change. Make it!

I decided to sit down and make a list of all the things I wasn’t happy with in life. A few of those items on my list included work, habits, the kind of Mother I was being. My life is 100% my responsibility and the same goes for you. We can’t control every situation, but we can control our perspectives of them.

A vision board is exactly what my life is missing. If you’re not sure what I am talking about, this post from Elizabeth Rider is the best! Seeing your goals visually will make a huge difference and the kick in the pants that’s needed.

Moral of the story – It is not what you are that holds you back, it was what you think you are not.

Most of the time, it’s the fear of failure as well that keeps me back. I have been wanting to make a few drastic changes in my life for the past year but it has taken all my courage to get to this point. I will get through it though, I know I will.

To be rejected or turned down is never easy, you will really end up feeling like you’ve lost the game. But that doesn’t mean you’re not enough, you’re just not what they’re looking for, so get back up and try again. Think of the things that you could have improved and try new things the next time. It’s how I normally do it.
